As well as THE GREAT BUCKET RESCUE – We have specialised recycling at selected locations throughout the Central Hawke’s Bay.
Below is a list of what and how we recycle, and what happens to it afterwards…
HOW YOU CAN HELP: Drop your recycling into our recycling buckets and bins. But PLEASE:
- ENSURE YOUR RECYCLING IS CLEAN AND DRY.
- Place your recycling IN the bin! (Not on it, or at it, or near it….IN THE BIN)
- If you transport your recycling in some form of bag or container empty this into the recycling bin. DO NOT PLACE THE CONTAINER IN THE BIN.
- Jars go IN the jar cupboard (when possible) – if the cupboard is full, stacking boxes of jars next to the cupboard is acceptable.
From time to time other weird and wonderful items can be recycled via The Sustainable Ewe – but please message or email first and check if it is acceptable.
Batteries
Can be recycled at the libraries (Both Wiapukurau and Waipawa)
Candle Wax
Instead of throwing out those used candles: drop them into The Sustainable Ewe
These can be reconstituted into a variety of things including fire starters.
Coffee Capsules
Dolce Gusto Coffee Capsules
DOLCE GUSTO BRANDED ONLY can be dropped at The Sustainable Ewe or in the special bucket at Waipawa Library
Once collected, the NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® capsules are cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled products.
PLEASE ensure your waste is dry before placing in the recycling bins
Moccona/L’Or/Illy/Jeds Coffee Capsules
MOCCONA/L’OR BRANDED ONLY can be dropped at The Sustainable Ewe
Once collected, L’OR and Moccona capsules are shredded to separate the coffee ground from the aluminium. The aluminium is then melted in order to be remolded to make new recycled products.
Nespresso Coffee Capsules
NESPRESSO BRANDED ONLY can be dropped at The Sustainable Ewe or in the special bucket at Waipawa Library
The capsules are shredded and metals are melted down and turned into new aluminum products. Residual coffee is separated and sent to an industrial composting facility.
Egg Cartons
Egg cartons can be dropped at The Sustainable Ewe.
These are redistributed to those members who have chickens (can be collected from The Sustainable Ewe). And taken to The Food Basket CHB where they are put to good use distributing eggs in the daily food rescue boxes.
Any carton from a half dozen to full dozen (and sizes in between) are gratefully accepted.
PLEASE: Clean egg cartons only. (Egg cartons that have broken egg, or other contaminates are not suitable for recycling)
Glass Jars and Bottles
CURRENTLY ON HOLD – PLEASE DO NOT DROP OFF GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
Glass jars and bottles can be dropped at The Sustainable Ewe.
These are available for collection from “The Jar Cupboards” for anyone wanting them for using in making preserves and pickles et cetera
Any jar or bottle with a metal ‘pop top’ lid, Agee style, or Moccona coffee jar can be recycled
PLEASE: Ensure the jars are clean and dry. Jars with plastic lids (e.g. Vegemite et cetera) are not useful for bottling, therefore we ask that you recycle these through the traditional CHBDC recycling.
Ice Cream Containers
Always gratefully accepted at The Sustainable Ewe.
2 Litre Ice Cream Containers are an integral part of our Bokashi Starter Kits.
PLEASE ensure containers are clean, dry, and fit for purpose. (With lids if possible)
Metal Bottle Tops
Both types of Metal Tops: Magnetic (Beer tops, Jar lids) and Non Magnetic Aluminium and Alloy (Wine tops, Pull tops) – (If you are unsure we have a handy-dandy magnet available)
These have SEPERATE containers at The Sustainable Ewe.
We also have BOTTLE TOP SWAPPA BUCKETS available at The Sustainable Ewe for pubs and events. Simply grab a bucket (or buckets) from us, and once full return for an empty set!
Plastic Bottle Tops
Both soda style bottle tops (No 2 – HDPE) and Milk bottle tops (No 5 – PP) can no longer be recycled using CHBDC curbside recycling. They CAN however via The Sustainable Ewe.
PLEASE ensure tops are clean and dry. Tops are two separate recycling streams please put your HDPE or PP in the correct bins provided.
Tetrapaks
Please cut open your Tetra Pak packages, wash them out, leave the lids on, let them dry.
